Surface tension-driven convection patterns in two liquid layers

چکیده
Two superposed liquid layers display a variety of convective phenomena that are inaccessible in the traditional system where the upper layer is a gas. We consider several pairs of immiscible liquids. Once the liquids have been selected, the applied temperature difference and the depths of the layers are the only independent control parameters. Using a perfluorinated hydrocarbon and silicone oil system, we have made the first experimental observation of convection with the top plate hotter than the bottom plate. Since the system is stably stratified, this convective flow is solely due to thermocapillary forces. We also have found oscillatory convection at onset in an acetonitrile and n-hexane system heated from below. The experimental observations are in reasonable agreement with linear stability analyses. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. PACS: 47.20.Dr; 47.20.Bp; 47.54.+r; 47.20.Ky; 68.10.−m

Long-wavelength surface-tension-driven Bénard convection: experiment and theory
Surface-tension-driven Bénard (Marangoni) convection in liquid layers heated from below can exhibit a long-wavelength primary instability that differs from the more familiar hexagonal instability associated with Bénard. This long-wavelength instability is predicted to be significant in microgravity and for thin liquid layers. The instability is studied experimentally in terrestrial gravity for ...
متن کاملExperimental and numerical study of anomalous thermocapillary convection in liquid gallium
Thermocapillary Marangoni convection of liquid gallium was studied experimentally and numerically. A specially designed experimental setup ensured an oxide-free surface of the liquid gallium for a very long time. The convective flow at the free surface was found to be directed opposite to both buoyancy-driven and ordinary thermocapillary convection. The anomalous direction of the thermocapillar...
متن کاملOn Marangoni convective patterns driven by an exothermic chemical reaction in two-layer systems
This article is devoted to the investigation of Marangoni-driven pattern formation at the interface between two immiscible fluids filling a Hele-Shaw cell, each of them containing a reactant of an exothermic neutralization reaction. In such a system, convective patterns arise when one reactant diffuses through the interface to react with the other chemical species in one of the fluids. A chemo-...

متن کاملNonlinear Marangoni convection in circular and elliptical cylinders
The spatial organization of single-fluid Marangoni convection in vertical cylinders with circular and elliptical horizontal cross-section is described. The convection is driven by an imposed heat flux from above and driven by Marangoni stresses at a free but undeformed surface due to temperature-dependent surface tension. The solutions and their stability characteristics are obtained using bran...
